Public use headphones, and why this is NASTY.

We usually have headphones attached to the public use computers so people can use them if they want/need to. Currently, however, we don't offer this service.

Why? Because people STEAL the headphones. Nice, huh?

I don't understand the whole public use headphones, anyway. I mean, really, who wants to put those nasty things on your head? Do you know where they've been? Do you know who was sitting at this computer just 20 minutes before you got here? Yup, the homeless man who probably hasn't washed his hair in...well, I don't even want to know how long. You know what else? He was using those head phones.

The example doesn't even have to be that extreme. I just think the whole idea of putting those things on your ears after who knows how many people have used them is GROSS. Ew!!

The other thing that really gets me is the people who ask for headphones. No, not ask, DEMAND. They get on a computer that doesn't have a pair, come up to the desk and demand that we supply them with headphones. Then they get pissed off because we don't have any extras because PEOPLE STEAL THEM.

Actually. it's all part of some sort of library conspiracy that we librarians are leading. We are only here to make your life miserable.

If you want to be sure you will have a pair of headphones on your computer, bring your own from home!! And that way, you know where they've been!

That IS gross! I ride the metro bus into work and I HATE the thought of leaning my head on the headrest. The ride is ~40 min, so there is no way I can stand that long not resting my head... I try not to think about who else has been there though. Then I look at the window and see greasy head smears and get even more grossed out. Ahhh!!

At the library I work at, we check them out to patrons so we don't lose them. Of course, we clean them between uses. More often than not, they need it. Yeah... gross!
